2016 Raptor Closures on Donner Summit - in effect until further notice

This year's peregrine falcon nest at Black Wall has been located in the grotto at the base of Rambo Crack up Cannibal Gully. The Land Trust, Access Fund and the Save Donner Summit Climbing Group are asking climbers to please respect a seasonal closure of routes from the left side of Cannibal Gully on the left to Hungover Hangover/Empthy Sky on right. Primer should be fine, as well as anything around the corner to the right (One Hand Clapping), but the belay stance at the top of Rat's Tooth is close enough to agitate this falcon. The female seemed more high-strung than birds in recent years and is possibly a new individual  so we want to keep folks out of that gully, or line of sight.

Affected routes include: Touch and Go, Hungover Hangover, Rat's Tooth, Empty Sky, Rhythm Killer, Pinball Junkie, Inner Recess, Rambo Crack Space Invaders, and Bourbon Street.

There are still PLENTY of other routes to choose from at Black Wall and elsewhere on Donner Summit. Lizard Ledge is out of sight and should be okay, however, when hiking or climbing outside this closure buffer nearby, please avoid disturbance, keep noise to a minimum, and use your best judgement to gauge and mitigate your impact.

We will be monitoring the nest, and the closure will be lifted when nesting activities have ceased for the year. The nest had two eggs, and the female was incubating, so they may wrap up by mid-July, but these routes are closed until further notice.

If anybody has any questions about the birds or status updates (which would be welcome), please email John Svahn at john@tdlandtrust.org 530.582.4711.

Get to Know a Land Trust Property with a Hike Ambassador

The Truckee Donner Land Trust Hike Ambassador Program is a program provided to visitors and the community free of charge. Hike Ambassadors are current or past board members who are available to accompany a group of eight or more hikers who would like to better explore properties acquired by the Land Trust. Knowledgeable Ambassadors can provide information, history, and stories about the property as well as tell about how the Land Trust acquired the property. Many Hike Ambassadors can share information about the flora and fauna of the area too. Interested groups may contact KV at the Land Trust to be put in contact with a Hike Ambassador chairman: kv@tdlandtrust.org, 530-582-4711.
